St. John’s School instills in its students intellectual enthusiasm, leadership, and an appreciation of discovery. We encourage students to focus on achievement with a willingness to explore varied paths to reach their goals. Because the SJS community revels in scholarly, athletic, and artistic adventure, day-to-day life at St. John’s is filled with the joy of learning and doing, both for students and for faculty.

Throughout the thirteen-year sequence, our students thrive in an environment that combines challenge with support, work with play, and individual success with the common good. We celebrate the student willing to use these special years to engage in the possibilities at St. John's and in the world beyond.

The St. John's Fine Arts Department Mission is to provide an authentic arts experience, honoring the creative process while providing a foundation of solid technical training while having fun.

St. John's School Alumni Spotlights

Katherine Y. King '92

Dr. Katherine Y. King is an Associate Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Baylor College of medicine. She studied biochemical sciences at Harvard University and then completed a dual-degree program at Washington University in St. Louis where she earned both her M.D. and Ph.D. over the course of seven years. She returned to Houston to complete her residency and fellowship at Baylor. In addition to her research, she is also a co-founder and serves on the advi¬sory board of Doctors For Change (http://doctorsforchange.org/), a nonprofit that seeks “to increase access to care and improve the health of all Houstonians and all Texans through research, education, collaboration, and advocacy.”

Zachary Heinzerling '02

Zachary began his career at HBO as a production assistant. He quickly worked his way up the ranks on four consecutive Emmy Award-winning documentaries and the Emmy Award-winning series 24/7, working as a field producer and cinematographer. In 2012, he left HBO to complete his feature debut, the multi-award-winning film, Cutie and the Boxer, which he both directed and shot.

Christy Haubegger ’86

Christy is an Agent at Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a leading entertainment and sports agency with offices in Los Angeles, New York, London, Nashville, and Beijing, where she provides insights on diverse markets to the agency’s clients and buyers. She is based in the Los Angeles office, and works closely with such clients as Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Andy Garcia, and America Ferrera, among others. Christy gave the commencement address during St. John’s School’s 2018 Commencement ceremony.

Rakesh Agrawal ’93

Rakesh Agrawal ’93 is living the SnapStream dream. As the founder and CEO of his Houston-based software company, he and his team get paid to watch TV – and they love it. Commonly referred to as a “DVR on steroids,” SnapStream is a TV-search software that can record over 10 TV channels per appliance. Users can then search all of their recordings at once to find one specific clip, highlight, or quote. SnapStream is how hundreds of organizations, including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Buzzfeed, Politico, and the U.S. Senate, record TV and create TV clips.

Richie Mercado Receives USATF Education Award
1/7/2022
Congratulations to Coach Richie Mercado ’79 for receiving the 2021 USATF Fred Wilt Educator of the Year Award. Coach Mercado has been involved with USATF since 1990 and met the late Coach Wilt soon afterward. From volunteer to the head of the regional congress, Coach Mercado has been at the forefront of the federation’s track and field education on a global scale.

Journey in the Tourney- Mavs Make the NCAA's

So far, St. John’s Mavericks have found their way into the NCAA tournament in football, field hockey, cross country, and soccer. Meg Shelburne '20 and the Middlebury Panthers won the NCAA D3 Field Hockey Championship and more Mavs still have games to play starting on Saturday.

McKone Finds Formula for Success in Professional Lacrosse League
8/19/2021
Lindsey McKone ’16 is in a league of her own. The only Texan to be drafted by the new AU professional lacrosse league, McKone just finished a decorated collegiate career at Northwestern University. In her last season with the Wildcats, she received IWLCA Second Team All-American lacrosse honors in addition to First-Team All-Big Ten accolades. Her team finished the 2021 season as Big Ten Champs and NCAA semifinalists. McKone was also selected as Academic All-Big Ten along with teammates Carson Copeland ’17, and Kate Copeland ’17. All three were recognized with IWLCA Academic honors. Lindsey was also a nominee for the 2021 Tewaaraton Award.

Congratulations to Lindsey McKone ’16 of Northwestern for receiving IWLCA Second Team All-American honors in addition to First-Team All-Big Ten accolades. McKone was selected as Academic All-Big Ten along with teammates Carson Copeland ’17, and Kate Copeland ’17. Lindsey garnered distinction honors as well. The Wildcats were Big Ten Champs and made it to the NCAA semifinals this season.

Bears Net NCAA Tourney Win
5/16/2021
The Wash U Bears Women’s Tennis team landed in the NCAA Division III team tournament with an at-large bid against host UT Dallas. The Bears were down 4-3 before Hannah Johnston ’18 won her match to set up the clincher with the Bear’s #2 singles. Sophia Huynh ’19 won her singles match to contribute to the win. Katherine Johnston ’20 also competed at #2 doubles. The Bears advanced to the round of 16 only to drop to the Pirates of Southwestern University 5-1. Hannah Johnston picked up the lone win for Wash U. Hannah Johnston and Sophia Huynh were also selected to the University Athletic Association (UAA) Spring All-Academic Team.
